Triton Version

Veryn is the Goddess of Justice and Retribution, and is worshipped throughout Triton culture and history. She is one of the greater deities, and is responsible for judging the souls of the dead and deciding where the final currents will take them. She is feared and revered, and believes that no one person should ever have too much good nor too much bad. This is one of the core values of the Tritons; they believe in true Justice and deserved fortune either good or bad.

She is called upon during Conclaves to provide guidance to the decision and discussions, so that the Tritons know that the result is just. Triton clerics will read the change of currents, releasing pieces of kelp and discerning the meaning from whether it rises, stays still or sinks.

When a person dies their souls pass to Veryn for judgement, she will call on the songs of the sea to tell the story of the soul’s life. She will then see that the soul receives justice for what they deserved and lead them to one of three currents that will carry them to their next destination. If a soul is deemed good, having served their family, lodge, conclave and society in life, and Veryn sees they deserve peace, she will lead them to the current that will take them to the Final Sea among the Stars. If she believes that a soul has come to her too soon, or has a chance of redemption, she will guide them to the current that will carry them to the Ocean’s Nest where the soul will wait to be reborn. Finally, if a soul is judged and fails to impress Veryn, she will drag them to the strongest currents that will take the soul to the Darkest Deep amongst the ancient monsters where the soul will suffer for the rest of eternity until the Final Tide draws out.

Tritons will honour Veryn with prayers and idols carved or coral and stone. They will pray to her looking for guidance in difficult decisions, when they wish to know what is just and true. Some Tritons believe they have seen her amongst the forest of kelp, some believe she has fought beside them during great battles, some have felt her guiding touch when they have helped a fellow Triton.

A triton swirled in the currents is the symbol of Veryn, the three prongs of the triton resembling the final three paths that a soul will travel in death and the currents the journey that life will be judged. Many Tritons who worship Veryn will carry this symbol carved into their armour or as a carved piece of coral as a reminder of the justice that all creatures deserve.

Clerics and Paladins that work in service of Veryn will teach and observe the ways of the Goddess of Justice and Retribution. Teaching that it is not up to mortal souls to decide if a person is truly just, that everyone deserves the opportunity in life to change the story that the sea will sing to Veryn. But Paladin’s and other Warriors are sometimes called upon to defend the greater justice of the people and when necessary will kill and deliver souls directly to Veryn so that she may pass her judgement.
