Melkis

Melkis

The gods didn't abandon us. They are just waiting for the rod to set.

Details

Species: Ghost (formerly humanoid - race unknown)

Role: Former worshipper at the shrine beneath the Ice House; self-appointed guardian of "the pattern" in the sky.

Appearance: A translucent, shivering incorporeal figure wearing cracked brass goggles over his eyes. The original body was reportedly "unmade."

Status: Destroyed - dissipated during combat in the cavern beneath the Ice House, Session 4. His remains yielded a Frail Essence and Ethereal Ichor, harvested by Growth.

Personality: Paranoid, urgent, and volatile. Fixated on "counting the cracks" in what he perceives as a stitched-together false sky. Genuinely believed he was protecting the world by remaining in the cavern. Initially warned the party rather than threatening them; became dangerous when they tried to leave.

Motivation: Believed that if he left the specific spot in the cavern - the only place where he could see "the pattern" - the weave of reality would unravel. Also terrified of "the ticking man," who he claimed would come to collect a debt of borrowed or stolen time if Melkis became visible again.

Flaws: Deeply unstable. His desire to keep the party in the shelter with him, ostensibly for their safety, escalated rapidly into possession and violence. The truth of his beliefs (genuine prophetic insight vs. the delusions of an undead mind) is unverified.

Session History

Session 4 - The Ice House Cavern

Melkis was first experienced as a whispering voice heard during Maeve's watch - "The gods didn't abandon us" - seeming to come from below the trapdoor. He manifested fully in the cavern beneath the Ice House as a translucent figure in cracked brass goggles, fixating on the green lantern and the remains of the shrine. Maeve established dialogue; he gave his name and explained he had been "unmade" for seeing too much and now kept watch over the pattern in the sky, too afraid to leave lest "the ticking man" collect his debt.

When Bam Bam attempted to leave via the rope ladder, Melkis became enraged, flew upstairs, and successfully possessed Bam Bam (failed Charisma save). He was expelled when Growth cast Gentle Repose on the possessed Bam Bam. Combat continued; Melkis used Withering Touch (8 necrotic to Bam Bam) and Horrific Visage (10 psychic to Growth; Growth frightened). Monroe destroyed him with Illusory Darts, dropping a chunk of ice onto the ghost. His final words were a paranoid whisper about the gods. Growth harvested a Frail Essence and Ethereal Ichor from his remains.
