The Ice Shelter

The Ice Shelter

Overview

A small, runed shelter of ice and stone standing alone in the wilderness — welcoming to the friendly, repelling to those who mean harm.

DETAILS

Region: Wilderness of Iskavell — between the swampy forest and the coastal lighthouse.

Type: Shelter / Wilderness Outpost

Status: Standing and habitable; appears to have been used recently (freshly cut firewood was present). Now cleared of its ghostly inhabitant.

Atmosphere: Warm and sheltered compared to the freezing exterior. Fur rugs cover the stone floor. The fireplace emits warmth. An enchanted kettle fills the air with the calming scent of herbal tea. The door bears runes that repel the hostile and welcome the friendly.

Secret

Secret

Hidden Truth: The trapdoor beneath the rug leads to an underground cavern containing a destroyed shrine, bone offerings, and scattered parchment — the former haunt of the ghost Melkis. Who built this shelter and installed the runes? Who maintained the firewood and the enchanted kettle? The shelter shows signs of recent habitation; its owner is unknown.

GM Notes: The enchanted tea kettle was taken by the party (held by Groth). The book on the writing desk was not examined by the party — it remains present in the shelter. The freshly cut firewood suggests someone visits or lives here. Five humanoid sets of footprints were observed leading away from the shelter in the snow.

Description

A squat structure of ice and stone standing roughly 15–20 feet in diameter in the wilderness between the swampy forest and the coast. The door is set into the stone and bears carved runes; Bam Bam was physically repelled when he attempted to force it, confirming the runes are magically active. Maeve opened the door normally and was admitted without incident. Inside: soft fur rugs and pelts cover the stone floor; a bedroll is laid near the wall; a small fireplace sits on the northern wall with a tea kettle, drying herbs, and freshly cut firewood ready. A writing desk in the interior held a closed book. The enchanted kettle had apparently been running throughout the eight-hour rest, filling the air with a calming magical scent. A trapdoor, concealed beneath the warmest of the rugs, leads via rope ladder to a cavern below.

Connections

NPC Connections

Melkis: The ghost haunted the cavern directly below the shelter; the shelter's rune-door and the specific cavern were linked to his haunting and his refusal to leave. He was destroyed in the shelter/cavern this session.

Unknown Owner: Someone maintains this shelter — fresh firewood, drying herbs, and a book suggest a living inhabitant. Five humanoid footprints lead away from the shelter. Identity unknown.

Quest Connections

Return to Oak Haven: The party sheltered here en route to the lighthouse and Oak Haven; it served as a waypoint on the journey.

Session History

Session N — The Ticking Man's Debt

The party arrived at the shelter during a blizzard at approximately 5 p.m. Bam Bam was repelled by the runed door; Maeve opened it. The party took a long rest inside with rotating watches. Groth identified the enchanted tea kettle during their watch. Maeve heard a ghostly whisper from the cavern below. After the rest, the party descended via the trapdoor and encountered the ghost Melkis. After a failed negotiation, Melkis possessed Bam Bam; Groth expelled him with Gentle Repose. Combat concluded with Monroe destroying Melkis. The party departed at approximately 1–2 a.m. The enchanted tea kettle and the strange green lantern (from the cavern) were taken. The book on the desk was not examined and remains in the shelter.
